Lately I've been getting into filming, and I would like to know what would be the best shotgun mike to get for $150 or under. I kind of prefer shotgun to boom, because I might also want to do sound recording for samples and such.

For $150 go with the Rode

For $150 go with the Rode VideoMic. It's a professional grade shotgun microphone that's been getting some rave reviews. For the price, it's a pretty good deal. Another option would be the ATR55 : Cardioid Condenser Shotgun Microphone from Audio-Technica. This one is smaller, lighter, and cheaper than the Rode.

The Oktava MC012 can work if

The Oktava MC012 can work if you roll off the low end. Finding it is the challenge. It runs under $100. Don't forget that you'll need wind protection / suspension as well.

Where I come from the

Where I come from the Sennheiser MKH 416 seems to be the industry standard for film, but they a quite expensive.
So I recommend something like the Rode NTG-1 or NTG-2 shootgun. I think they float around about $200 US. Also I know Audio Technica makes shotguns arranging from $150 to $900 US.
