What is Soundsnap?

Soundsnap is the best platform to find and share free sound effects and loops- legally. It is a collection of original sounds made or recorded by its users, and not songs or sound FX found on commercial libraries or sample CD's.

It was originally started by a small group of sound people from all over the world. Our common belief is that sounds and samples should be free for everyone to use in their projects, commercial or not.

Our users are a diverse mix of sound designers, sound artists, web game developers, filmmakers and music producers. Hobbyists and home video makers are welcome too.

What Soundsnap is NOT:

  • An alternative to Myspace, Limewire or BitTorrent.
  • A place to upload your band's songs or your favourite mp3's. Soundsnap is only for sound effects and loops.
  • A place you can upload or find sounds from commercial libraries. All sounds here are original- made or recorded by its users.

We encourage everyone to upload high quality sound FX and samples, helping us make every kind of sound available on Soundsnap.

We are looking for feedback from the community to constantly improve, and we depend on our users for that. So please feel free to leave a recommendation or feedback in the special section of our forum.

Just a thought.

I noticed that several people on YouTube have seen my links to Soundsnap and started to use sounds. However, very few are posting the link back to the site. I have asked them to put it on their videos and 'details' section but I am not sure how many people see it on my page and come here.

I want to suggest a few things that might help with that.

1) First thing when anyone comes to the main page there should be a HUGE note about giving credit where credit is due. I know it is mentioned in the rules and other spots but right up front would get more attention. That note should be on top of every category too.

(the people I heard about this site from were friends in Italy but I just noticed they had not put a link over to you all either. they told me by email)

2) A SoundSnap Icon/logo with the Embed code that we could add to our web sites and pages would not only serve to bring more traffic back here but would also allow us another way to promote this site and all the great 'sound makers'.

Just some ideas. Since I use sounds but only bring a few to the table, I do all I can to promote the site.

Indeed, we do need more ways

Indeed, we do need more ways to spread the word.

1) I might ask people to link back if they use our sounds in their work. I should probably put that message in a banner on rotation. Although attribution is not required, links are the best way to let people find out about us and the contributors. So we should probably make that more obvious.

2) I can probably make an area with some promotional banners/logos for download.
