What is Soundsnap?

Soundsnap is the best platform to find and share free sound effects and loops- legally. It is a collection of original sounds made or recorded by its users, and not songs or sound FX found on commercial libraries or sample CD's.

It was originally started by a small group of sound people from all over the world. Our common belief is that sounds and samples should be free for everyone to use in their projects, commercial or not.

Our users are a diverse mix of sound designers, sound artists, web game developers, filmmakers and music producers. Hobbyists and home video makers are welcome too.

What Soundsnap is NOT:

  • An alternative to Myspace, Limewire or BitTorrent.
  • A place to upload your band's songs or your favourite mp3's. Soundsnap is only for sound effects and loops.
  • A place you can upload or find sounds from commercial libraries. All sounds here are original- made or recorded by its users.

We encourage everyone to upload high quality sound FX and samples, helping us make every kind of sound available on Soundsnap.

We are looking for feedback from the community to constantly improve, and we depend on our users for that. So please feel free to leave a recommendation or feedback in the special section of our forum.

I hope you enjoy your time here and Happy Snapping!

Some of you may know, most probably don't know what Second life is. To sum it up, basically it is a live experience online, where people all over the world can basically come together, make stuff, chat, etc. Nealy all of the content within Second Life however is created through the individuals who log into it. Even better is that the economy is actually real with the in world currency completely transferable into USD. There are and have been very dedicated folks inside of Second Life who have created lots of content and have made some real money out of it, even some who make a living from it.

And this is where I come in. I make some furniture and animations and such within Second Life, and would like to use SoundSnap files to upload and use in Second Life. Right now I am not really selling anything for profit, most of it is just a hobby, and while this might all fall under the Game Developer kind of field, I just want to be sure before I do something that might get me in a heap of trouble.

My goals are just to add some flare to my areas, like some ambient noises to my house, some sound effects to my various animations, etc. Some of which may at some point in time be sold for profit, but not the sound files themselves just alone, they will be tied into an object, for example.

I am okay to do this, right? ^^;

Hello Lucky C, First of all,

Hello Lucky C,

First of all, because you mentioned that you 're from Chicago in your other post, I wanted to say that my ex-girlfriend is from Wilmette. I would really like to visit one day.

To your question now... You can definitely use the sounds in the way you specified. All our users have agreed to our terms and license which clearly allow the copyright-free use of their sounds in any kind of work, commercial or not.

By the way, where did you find out about us? Was it from this article?

Oh wow, no actually. I just typed into google some Sound related keywords, I forgot and then I came across this website and it was great to have everything all listed and ready to go. ^^

I will definitely be giving credit to Sounsnap in SL though, as I am sure other people will find it equally as useful.
