What is Soundsnap?

Soundsnap is the best platform to find and share free sound effects and loops- legally. It is a collection of original sounds made or recorded by its users, and not songs or sound FX found on commercial libraries or sample CD's.

It was originally started by a small group of sound people from all over the world. Our common belief is that sounds and samples should be free for everyone to use in their projects, commercial or not.

Our users are a diverse mix of sound designers, sound artists, web game developers, filmmakers and music producers. Hobbyists and home video makers are welcome too.

What Soundsnap is NOT:

  • An alternative to Myspace, Limewire or BitTorrent.
  • A place to upload your band's songs or your favourite mp3's. Soundsnap is only for sound effects and loops.
  • A place you can upload or find sounds from commercial libraries. All sounds here are original- made or recorded by its users.

We encourage everyone to upload high quality sound FX and samples, helping us make every kind of sound available on Soundsnap.

We are looking for feedback from the community to constantly improve, and we depend on our users for that. So please feel free to leave a recommendation or feedback in the special section of our forum.

I hope you enjoy your time here and Happy Snapping!

Hi all,

We have added Google ads on the website. These will (hopefully) provide us with some income to pay for the bandwidth and the people working on this website. Ads are necessary to support this free resource without any need for paid subscriptions.

I would like to hear your feedback and what you think about this. Let me know if you don't like them and if they are relevant or not, because we might need to make some settings so we only show relevant ads!

Hey guys,

I 've changed places on the Google ads and we 're making a little bit of money (very little).

I wanted some feedback, especially from our most active users (sampleconstruct, frifrafro etc).

These are the questions that are going through my head:

Do you think the ads are too intrusive or too many?
Are they ugly?
Do they make the site look cheap and low quality?
Do you think it will put people off?

I know that we will have different opinions on this, but I would like to hear them all.

I think we (the Internet users) have pretty much grown immune to Google ads, so we do not even look at them.

So, if they make you money, by all means use them!

Hehe.

You have a point there Prince. Especially tech savvy users have developed Google ad blindness.

Hi Tasos,

The place for the advertisement is just still in order. Maybe it is to be provided possibly a specially side only for advertisement. No matter you need of course the money and this goes not without advertisement.

Many Greetings

OK.

I see what you 're saying: to separate the screen and have only one part of it for adverts, right? (For example the right 'sidebar' part.)

Many thanks. Another idea

Many thanks. Another idea would be special discounts for Soundsnap members (Hi Digidesign :-). And last my biggest wish would be a loop function.

Well besides that strange

Well besides that strange Hotel I mentioned in the other thread most of the adds seem to refer to commercial sound sites (which is a bit strange as we are a website for free sounds and advertize for commercial websites). So I'm alright with this although I preferred the old, add-free Soundsnap. Just found this add (check on the right): Have Knuckle Arthritis? - So do musicians and sounddesigners get Arthritis more often than normal human beings? I remember Frank Zappa had this illness.

Hehe.

I agree that the ads are not THAT relevant. I would prefer to have adverts of Native Instruments and Ableton- we 'll be sellings ads directly in the future. But having paid sound adverts is kinda funny. We are essentially getting paid by our competition..! :-)

I just want to point out once more that I am not making any money and the ads give a tiny income. But every little helps to keep the site alive.

Well, we could all make a little money by putting up a special section in Soundsnap with sounds for sale?!

Hmm.

I have thought about this a lot. I was actually considering a system with 'micropayments'. But I 'm not sure we want to spoil the '100% free' spirit right now. It might not be in line with the Soundsnap concept. Its also hard to implement and could create promote copyright infringement. Its a tricky subject.

But its something to think about in the future.

For now, you can sure promote your own commercial websites through your profile (better than nothing).
