What is Soundsnap?

Soundsnap is the best platform to find and share free sound effects and loops- legally. It is a collection of original sounds made or recorded by its users, and not songs or sound FX found on commercial libraries or sample CD's.

It was originally started by a small group of sound people from all over the world. Our common belief is that sounds and samples should be free for everyone to use in their projects, commercial or not.

Our users are a diverse mix of sound designers, sound artists, web game developers, filmmakers and music producers. Hobbyists and home video makers are welcome too.

What Soundsnap is NOT:

  • An alternative to Myspace, Limewire or BitTorrent.
  • A place to upload your band's songs or your favourite mp3's. Soundsnap is only for sound effects and loops.
  • A place you can upload or find sounds from commercial libraries. All sounds here are original- made or recorded by its users.

We encourage everyone to upload high quality sound FX and samples, helping us make every kind of sound available on Soundsnap.

We are looking for feedback from the community to constantly improve, and we depend on our users for that. So please feel free to leave a recommendation or feedback in the special section of our forum.

I hope you enjoy your time here and Happy Snapping!

Thanks for providing such a useful web site.

Here's a few of my suggestions. I offer them in the spirit of improving an already terrific web site.

1. I'd rather see more results per page and scroll down. (I've got my Google results set to return 100 per page.) I know everybody won't want that so how about having some configuration parameters in the profile so I can set it the way I want it. This would be for the "browse by category" as well as the search results. In addition I'd like to see all the audio results as a single line with a hundred per page. Strip out most of the fluff. I don't need to see how many times it was downloaded. I don't need great big icons for the download buttons. Put all that data on the individual page for each sound.

2. I love the "Add to favorites" link, but it should be on the results page as well as the node page. I want to go down a long list of sounds auditioning each one as I go, clicking the "Add to favorites" as I go, selecting ones that come close to what I'm looking for. Then I'll go to my favorites list and re-audition the ones I've selected, removing some that fall short. Finally I'd like to click a single button to download all that are left in the favorites list. Last I delete all the favorites. It would be kind of like a shopping cart for sounds.

3. Your pages look nice but could be (for me) more functional. Having the left-hand bar listing the featured user, latest audio and random audio is not the best use of the screen space. Personally I'd like to see these on a separate page, not on every page of your web site. (They're even on this page, the forum topic form. Why would I want to click on a random audio clip while writing forum entry.)

4. I'd like a way to see only the sounds I've rated myself. This could be part of the search function. Say I only want to see sounds that I have rated three stars or higher.

5. I'd like to see a place for user written articles. Perhaps a wiki or blog style. Tips on how to get the best recordings. When to record stereo and when mono. How should Foley be recorded? Should I fade in at the beginning and out at the end? Should I eq or add other effects? How many bits is enough? Mic selection and other gear considerations could be covered.

Well I think that's enough for now. I create these kinds of web sites for a living so I guess I can be a bit critical at times. I wouldn't take the time to offer these suggestions if the site weren't as good as it is. You can see my latest design at http://simplesearchapartments.com

Hi Rob, Thanks for the

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the feedback. You 've made some very interesting points.
I 'll get straight to answering:

1) I totally agree that we need more results per page- at least 10. But it overloads our server, because of all the data it has to pull from our database. Of course, as you said, we can make the sound results more minimal, with less information. Thats something to think about, but I can't promise it. And I kind of like our fancy icons :-)
It seems Usability Vs Aesthetics will always be a big debate. Perhaps we need to give that some more thought.

2) If you click on the waveform, you will see a bubble containing the 'add to favorites' option. But after adding it it will still take you to the sound detail page. We are soon going to develop a better system for downloading many sounds at a time though, similar to what you describe.

3) You are right that we should take some of the blocks off certain pages, like the forum.

4) This sounds like too much work for a function that is not that essential. Perhaps something to think about in the future.- but it definitely sounds secondary compared to more serious functions.

5) I am thinking of starting some kind of blog/articles/wiki section, but not exactly what yet... I want it to be something very different to anything else out there..

Thanks for putting time into sending us all this feedback. Your suggestions are all very valid and well thought.

You can't imagine how useful it is seeing how different users experience the website.

Speak soon,

T

Hi Geokranio,

Welcome to the community.

Althouth I am Greek, I would appreciate if you wouldn't use 'Greengish'- the mix of Greek with English characters. We only allow English writing on the forum, comments etc.

Regards,

Tasos

Hi everybody, it would be useful to have the full list of uploaded sounds as text only, in a different page (maybe) to have a full sight of our sounds on your server. Tnx!

By going to

By going to www.soundsnap.com/audio you can see a list of all sounds. Another way to do that is by hitting enter without having anything on the search bar.

A lighter, text only list of sounds is also possible- something to add in the future.

Right now we are focusing on optimizing the server, increasing page load times and also improving the overall design.
