Someone came by the XNA Creators club forums and posted this site. I must say right off the bat that Im impressed. Excellent collection, I just wish I could find more sounds and loops appropriate for a role playing game, more fantasy type. Hint hint..

Anyways, I was reviewing the license and trying to understand it, but I dont speak very good legalese. So if I could get some answers in english, it'd be great!

a) Can I as a game programmer use these sounds in my projects that I release for free?

b) How bout if I end up charging for a program? Are the sounds still useable?

c) I believe the license stated I did not need to credit the site or authors, but it would be welcomed. Am I correct?

d) Anything I should be concerned with if I DO use these sounds / loops ?

e) Can we require soundsnap users, or beg them at least, to upload more fantasy style loops and sounds? hehe

I'd appreciate any answers I can get on those though. I have no problems attributing these wonderful artists that spend their time making these wonderful sounds!

Protection would be appreciated so no one can access them (re-distribution is illegal).

But if the amount of sounds is not great, then you can also leave them unprotected in a directory.

Hi,
Like cdxrd, I develop a game and I've just find this incredible website.

I have read the license and this post, so we can use sounds to a game.
But I wish to know if I can leave them in a directory or if they need to be protected (with a software or integrated into a executable)?

Sorry for my english, I'm franch developper :-)

Yeah, I'd be interested in

Yeah, I'd be interested in seeing your project. Of course it's another thing is my computer would actually have a high enough RAM and Shader version to run it.

Hi cdxrd, Welcome to

Hi cdxrd,

Welcome to Soundsnap. We have a strong userbase from the videogame industry and hopefully will have more in the future.

To answer your questions:

a+b) Yes you can use them in any project, commercial or not, without having to pay for any fee or royalties.
Here is the part of he license that explains this:
(you are allowed)'d. to distribute copies or phonorecords of, perform publicly, and perform publicly by means of a digital audio transmission Derivative Works;'

Your videogame is considered to be a 'derivative work', since it contains and includes these sounds.

c) You do not necessarily have to attribute. But it would be very nice to do that. The best way would be to gather all the usernames of the artists/recordists and list them in your credits. It would also be great to credit Soundsnap too, saying something like 'Sounds and music were created by the following Soundsnap users:'. Then come and post it on our forum on the 'Your work that uses Soundsnap sounds' section.

d) Not really anything to worry about..

e) Go to the 'sound requests' forum for that and post something a bit more specific though. Are you looking for music or atmospheres/amiences? Do you also want individual sound effects or sound design?

Stay in touch!
