What is Soundsnap?

Soundsnap is the best platform to find and share free sound effects and loops- legally. It is a collection of original sounds made or recorded by its users, and not songs or sound FX found on commercial libraries or sample CD's.

It was originally started by a small group of sound people from all over the world. Our common belief is that sounds and samples should be free for everyone to use in their projects, commercial or not.

Our users are a diverse mix of sound designers, sound artists, web game developers, filmmakers and music producers. Hobbyists and home video makers are welcome too.

What Soundsnap is NOT:

  • An alternative to Myspace, Limewire or BitTorrent.
  • A place to upload your band's songs or your favourite mp3's. Soundsnap is only for sound effects and loops.
  • A place you can upload or find sounds from commercial libraries. All sounds here are original- made or recorded by its users.

We encourage everyone to upload high quality sound FX and samples, helping us make every kind of sound available on Soundsnap.

We are looking for feedback from the community to constantly improve, and we depend on our users for that. So please feel free to leave a recommendation or feedback in the special section of our forum.

I hope you enjoy your time here and Happy Snapping!

This is a great site, and I am having as much fun contributing as I am downloading. Some really nice sounds!

Besides some of the other suggestions already mentioned [and agreed to], I was wondering about an Index page of all those users who have contributed material? In addition to searching for particular sounds, sometimes I am curious what sounds other people have, and wondering if specific peple have joined, etc... and it is a bit laborious to think "hmmm, i wonder if so&so has joined?", searched their name, and if not,... having to repeat the process.

It also would be nice to be able see for ourselves as the community grows and not just rely on announcing their presence on the Introductions thread [something I haven't gotten around to myself].

Just a thought.

Thats a really good idea. I

Thats a really good idea.

I totally see your point about finding other people's sounds in this way.

There are many nice ways this could be implemented, for example there could be a 'Latest contributors' list or 'Most active contributors this week' list, rather than a plain list.

I 'll definitely put that in a 'to think about' list, as we are getting ready to start working on Version II in a wekk or two.

I 'm listening to your myspace right now.. Really enjoying 'Team Awesome'.

Nice- yeah, I think there

Nice- yeah, I think there are a lot of possibilties for an Index. I think it would be good to have a plain old directory-style list of everyone who has contributed, then have a couple fun ones like you mentioned: "Most active contributors of the week", "Latest contributors", etc.

Cheers for the kudos on "Team Awesome". Glad you dig.

In the same way iT can be

In the same way iT can be cool to see
some index list sorted like:
1 - "by Member name" (by name order)
2 - "by Number of total duration" (the sum of all sound duration for each member)
3 - "by Number of upload" (number of sound uploaded here)
4 - "by Number of download" (downloaded by other people)

Good ideas. I will have to

Good ideas.

I will have to discuss with our coder about all this.

I think that 'version 2' of Soundsnap will have to start developing in early August and finish in late August/early September.

All these ideas are being documented and the best will be realised.

Thanks PCM

Have a look at the freesound

Have a look at the freesound project's website for some additional ideas on searching and/or categorizing the database.
