Preview function

May I begin by first appolagising to Tasos for a possible overcrouding of the 'a new soundsnap' topic. No spamming was intended. I was not thinking about myself; 5 free downloads a month, whilst a slight pane, is manageable. I was mearly thinking about the impact it will have on the site's traffic, though I guess that remains to be seen. I, personally, am just a hobbyist who likes to either download sounds or just record my own and mess around with them a bit, and save the results only to my own computer. I don't think I will be uploading here, though, as to receive money for my sounds to me is immorral; I won't go on about this again as I already mentioned it in the other topic! But I thank Tasos for preserving the 5 free downloads so that the hobbyist isn't penalised and forgotten about. However, I am still not totally for this model on the grounds of what will happen to the site in a recession, and from time to time, if possible, I think we might need some statistics to be published to see what impact, if any, is being felt.

I would be a bit more convinced, though, if the preview function was a bit more obvious. I am a blind user of this site, and in spight of help from community members; Thanks! I just cannot see that preview function. I tryed it with one of the samples tagged 'politics'; I can't remember which, the closest I could see was the 2 format links forWave and MP3, I clicked MP3 and on the download box I clicked open instead of save, returned to the page and low and behold one of my free downloads was down the tube! Tasos, could you please make the preview function a bit more obvious in the shape of a link so that I don't have to waste downloads in order to listen to a file and decide if it is what I want?

please reply

Good day

As a suggestion, it might be

As a suggestion, it might be worth making it clearer that the preview is lower quality than the downloaded sound.

It makes sense to do lower quality previews for the reasons you mention, but before I read this in the forum, I was certainly under the impression that the quality of the preview reflected that of the download.

In fact I went to another site where I actually bought an effect that I thought was higher quality than similar ones here. For me, it was a one-off purchase, so it's less relevant to this site, but for your own benefit it might be worth considering putting the fact somewhere more prominent, in case people wanting larger numbers of sounds don't realise either.

Hi Spurry, There's no trick

Hi Spurry,

There's no trick here :-)

The player is orange and grey... You need to download Flash to see the website correctly.

Thanks.

I've been trying to work

I've been trying to work out, for 10 minutes, where the "Player on the left" is... is that the "preview" you're referring to?
Looking, looking, looking, can't find it... This is a trick, right? There is no player to preview the sound.

Matt, I cannot change the

Matt,

I cannot change the preview function at the moment, since it seems to work OK for most. But I 've upgraded your account, since you accidentally downloaded some sounds.

Timtube,

The preview is low quality on purpose, so that people with slow connections can also preview sounds. Its also lighter for our server. Furthermore, it stops people from recording and 'stealing' the high quality version.

But I still think you can get a pretty good idea of what the high quality file will sound like.

And You Tasos should make

And You Tasos should make the preview hih quality for those who WANT to know how it's going to sound like.
